"Madeline" (Available #9268) Hi Everyone! Maddie here! First - I want to thank all my sponsors who donated to ARPH to cover my medical bills. I am happy to report that because of your love and generosity, my bills have been covered. I really appreciate it. Second – I’d like to announce that I’m now ready to find my forever home! Even though my life was a little rough in the beginning, with each new day, I am gaining strength in my body and the confidence to step out into the world. I have come a long way, thanks to the dedicated efforts of my foster mom. A little history about myself… I was not very well socialized as a puppy… A nice couple with a child adopted me but they realized they couldn’t help me overcome my fear of adult humans so they contacted ARPH. I was brought into the ARPH program but escaped and was missing for several weeks. During that time, my front leg was severely injured. My front leg eventually had to be amputated because I never regained feeling in my leg, despite several months of therapy. After eleven months of intensive, socialization therapy and exercises, my fear of humans is abating. In a familiar environment, I willingly approach humans for affection. I am still a fairly timid girl however, and new or busy situations overwhelm me. When overwhelmed, I retreat to a quiet spot and I just watch events unfold. I will do best in a home with a fairly predictable routine and one or two other dogs from whom I can learn. I am a 'one person' dog and I have formed a tight bond with my foster mom. I will probably retain this 'one person' focus with my new family. Since I was raised outdoors prior to coming to ARPH, I adore any opportunity to be outside but I have adjusted well to indoor life. Frequent long walks or just 'quality' time spent in a securely fenced yard would be ideal for me. I’m still learning how to play with humans (I prefer to just "BE" (think ZEN) with them) but I adore a good game of chase with another dog. I am now ready for the next chapter of my journey through life. Even though I have some very special needs, I am a very special girl with a very special purpose in life. And that is to show the world that with a little grit and determination and a little help from my friends, any person or dog-person can succeed in life. My foster mom says that watching my personality unfold as I gained confidence in my world has been a very rewarding journey. Are you that special person who can provide the environment for me to thrive? Who can love me without smothering me? If so, please contact my rep, Gayle Lay . Please note: There may be other applications on these dogs. It is not first come, first serve; it's the home that best suits the dog as well as the best dog for the home. Therefore, all applications will be considered.

"Dusty" (Adopted!!! #9403)
Hello there everyone… My name is Dusty and I am a very spry, 8 yrs young redheaded girl… I’ve lived quite an interesting life and I’ve traveled to quite a few places already.. BUT – traveling around gets to you after a while so I thought I’d send out my “calling card” to some lucky family because I’m now ready to settle down and put down roots in one place! I am your quintessential lady with impeccable manners and a charming personality… I am the best walking companion you will ever have… My foster mom takes me for 2-3 mile walks every day, twice a day… Sometimes I even get to do a slow jog beside her as she rides her bicycle… I also get to play at the doggie park with all sorts of puppers big and small… I love to play with other dogs, male or female when I visit the dog park, but then I like to come back to my house with just my human…Kitties make me nervous so I don’t “do” kitties…. My foster mom says I am smart as a whip and that I learn new tricks with ease…I have “sit”, “stay” and “wait” down pat! I am working on “down” but I know I will have that mastered in very short order… I walk very well on a leash.. I am housebroken and I don’t chew on anything that isn’t mine… I don’t get on the furniture… I love my squeaky toys and my chew bones… I am a medium energy girl and I am as “Velcro” as they come.. I love attention and will gladly roll over to any human who will give me a belly rub… I would be a DYN-O-MITE therapy pup because I am gentle and kind and oh so sweet.. I can even charm the littlest humans when I’m in my “entertaining mode”! My ideal forever home would be as an “only” child with a couple or a single person who wants a good looking gal for companionship. I would even enjoy an older child or two in the household (10 or older) because that would mean more hands to pet me! I am currently living with my foster mom in Norfolk, VA. I will entertain any and all comers, just so long as you are willing to come to Norfolk, VA to meet me. If you are an approved adopter and meet my criteria, please send a note to my rep, Gayle Lay . I will then have a chat with her and get back to you! Please note: There may be other applications on these dogs. It is not first come, first serve; it's the home that best suits the dog as well as the best dog for the home. Therefore, all applications will be considered. |

"Cisco" (Available #10382)
Hi. I'm Cisco. I am a special needs pup… at least
that is what they keep saying I am… I don't know. I act just like any other pup!
My disability as they call it doesn't affect me at all! I was born deaf like
many white merles but no problems with my sight. I have the prettiest blue eyes. Please note: There may be other applications on these dogs. It is not first come, first serve; it's the home that best suits the dog as well as the best dog for the home. Therefore, all applications will be considered. |

"Samson" (Available #9405)
If you are looking for an easy going dog…then I
invite you to come meet Samson. He was pulled from a TN shelter, neutered in
NC, and this boy is so beautiful and sweet that he had people pulling over
in their vehicles to meet him.
His name is Samson. He is a black bi male with big, soft brown eyes. His coat is strange in that his undercoat is red...not sunburned. He has a full bushy tail. Our vet approximates his age at about 3-4 years old...but he may be a little older. He was very underweight and bony when he arrived, but has been making steady progress in gaining weight with 2 square meals a day. Samson is up to date on all vaccinations, and currently on HW and flea/tick preventative. Samson was either shell shocked or depressed when he first arrived in his foster home. He had been at a TN shelter for several weeks and we pulled him just hours before he was supposed to be euthanized. He had an owner's tag on but his owner never picked him up. Daily we see improvements - his confidence level is definitely on the rise. I've even seen a few smiles in the past few days. He loves adults, kids and affection. When you finish petting him he will gently give you his paw. When you talk to him, he gives you his belly. He will stay close by and seek your affection when he thinks you have a free hand. The first few days we had to reinforce house training but he has been perfect ever since. He's great on a leash. He does fine in the car but will drool a bit. Last weekend he began playing with a rope toy, shaking it, playing bowing and then sprinting across the yard with 6 dogs chasing him. He crept up on the bed but he's not comfortable being on furniture and promptly got off. He has learned how to take the stairs. He seems interested in the little dogs...gets a little perky if they give him attention. In the past few days, he has begun wrestling with my Neopolitan Mastiff. He is not a dominant dog. He ignores the cats. He loves lying outside by the front door. Samson was picked up by animal control as a stray, chasing cars, and so he needs a yard with a tall, secure fence. He sometimes counter surfs, but we are working on that. Ideally, he would have a doggy door leading to a secured backyard or an owner who is home most of the time. He may suffer from some form of separation anxiety when left too long or it could also be related to the need to get out and go potty. Samson is low key, gentle, patient and tolerant. He is currently fostered in Stafford, VA. If you are an APPROVED ADOPTER, and are interested in learning more about Samson, please contact Stephanie Carter. Please note: There may be other applications on these dogs. It is not first come, first serve; it's the home that best suits the dog as well as the best dog for the home. Therefore, all applications will be considered. |

"Indi" (Adoption Pending #10265)
Beauty meets
brains in Indigo, AKA “Indi”. Indi is a striking blue merle girl with
ice blue eyes, and one tipped ear. She is 11mo old, recently spayed,
Heartworm negative, currently on HW and flea/tick preventative, and up
to date on all vaccinations. Indi didn't get as much exercise as she
needed in her previous home, and so she is a little overweight right now
at about 46lbs. Through diet and exercise, her foster home is working on
getting her down to her ideal weight of about 40lbs. Indi is a
wonderful house dog, however, she requires a little more work than your
average pet. Indi is a true working dog, and so she needs a real job to
do. One that will keep her mind stimulated and her body exercised for
years to come. She can be a bit pushy to get what she wants, especially
with other dogs. Indi is a bit full of herself, and thinks she is the
"Queen of all she surveys!..." She just needs someone to remind her that
while she’s worthy of a crown, she is a princess, and not the ruler of
the realm. Please note: There may be other applications on these dogs. It is not first come, first serve; it's the home that best suits the dog as well as the best dog for the home. Therefore, all applications will be considered. |
